Benefits of joining the Boy Scouts of America.

So, your son is interested in joining Scouts.  Many things run through your mind including:
1. How much time will it take?
2. How much of a commitment is needed from me, the
parent or guardian?
3. How much money will it cost?
4. Are there any dangers?
5. How long does the program last?
6. What will my son gain from the program?

How much time will it take?

Like anything, it depends on what you put into it & how much of a commitment there is from you & your pack.  Typically, there is one den meeting each week & one pack meeting each month- each last about an hour.  In addition to the meetings, are the activities.  Activities can include: camping trips, playing sports, fundraising, volunteering, field trips, etc.

How much of a commitment is needed from me, the parent or gaurdian?

At the youngest level, Cub Scouts, a guardian is required to attend meetings with their Scout.  Not only is this is for the safety and well being of the child, but also, for the parent to get an idea of what goes on at each function and gives them an opportunity to get involved.  Once your child gets past the first year, you may elect to not attend every function with your child, but you will probably want to!  All overnighters require a parent or guardian.
These practices may vary!

How much money will it cost?

Like any group or organization, there are costs involved. Luckily, fundraisers are available (and sometimes mandatory) to help defer the costs.  Each group will handle their finances differently, but some general fees include:
$10 National Registration Fee
$20 Unit Charter Fee (paid by Pack)
Activities*- $5 Pinewood Derby
$5 Space Derby
Other- Camps, Training & Uniforms

* general- costs and activities will vary

Are there any dangers?

The Boy Scouts of America has nearly a century of conducting safe activities for all participants.  Resources and information are provided to maintain their safety record.  They also provide a safe & secure environment for youth members.  Your participation and observation will strengthen the established environment.

How long does the program last?

Some programs may last all year.  Typically, the den and pack meetings are held during the school year.  Activities are planned during summer months to keep the boys involved in their scouting commitment.  Day, weekend and summer camps are available, along with picnics, field trips etc.
